No, the person or organization planning to open a Jan Aushadhi store has to employ a B Pharm or D Pharm person. This is a requirement for opening any medical store as per the statutory requirement by the Drugs department

Do you need your own building to start a Jan Aushadhi Store

No, you can rent or lease the building (rental agreement/lease agreement and NOC from the owner is required for applying for Jan Aushadhi store and to get the Drug license

Yes, but you still have to employ a Pharmacist

What is the minimum space required for starting a Jan Aushadhi store

120 Sqft as prescribed by the Drugs Department who has to issue the Drug license

No restrictions on qualifications, there is no minimum qualifications. specified 

Regarding age anyone above 18 can start a Jan aushadhi store.

  2. Application Fee Non-refundable application fees of Rs. 5,000/- is to be deposited along with application form. Application fee is not applicable in case of applicant belongs to the category of Women Entrepreneurs, Divyaang, SC, ST & any entrepreneurs of aspirational districts

Mode of Payment

 Application Fee payment in favor of Bureau of Pharma Public sector Undertaking. The application fee amount should be deposited in only the PMBI Virtual account. Not by DD or cheque or Post office.

Registration Fee amount should be deposited only through Online i.e., NEFT / RTGS / IMPS / UPI

What are the Documents required for applying

  5. Pharmacist Registration certificate

How much money do I need to start a Jan Aushadhi Store?

  • Rental and Deposit amount will depend on the local area /market demand
  • Furnishing-Normal Cost of furnishing and interiors for 120 Sqft space will be around one Lakh to 1.5 Lakhs (This can go up based on local market cost space and standards)
  • Computer , Printer & Fridge ( all these are mandatory ) 50-60 thousand
  • Initial Stock Purchase  – I lakh
  • Working capital- 2-3 Lakhs ( depends on the rental and other fixed and variable cost)
  • Total around 5-6 Lakhs

What are the operational are cost

  • Rent
  • Salaries ( Pharmacist +one assistant )
  • If not self managed, you will need a store manager
  • Utility bills
  • Cost of buying stocks (depending on the turn over)

How much turnover /sales do I need to make the store profitable

Retail margins offered for Jan Aushadhi is 20%, if your monthly operational cost /fixed cost is 40,000 then you need a turnover of 2 Lakhs a month to break even Usually, 2-3 Lakhs is the break-even (depending on the locality and costs)

What about Expired Products

The normal retail margin is 20% , The Stores are given an additional 2% for all purchases to cover for expired goods

Can I sell other products

Yes, one cal sell allied products normally found in Medical store- Toothpaste /Toothbrush/cosmetics/men & women grooming products, etc

Can I sell other Medicines?

You are not allowed to sell any medicines other than products of PMBI.

How do I apply for a drug license

  • The basic requirement is minimum 120 Sqft space own/rented or leased and a qualified Pharmacist, there are a number of other documents required like the rental agreement/NOC /Possessions certificate of the owner , Building tax, lands tax  etc
  • Building specification are as per Drugs department –should have RC roofing, single entrance etc
  • The drug license should be obtained in the name of “Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Janaushadhi Kendra”

Do I need a GST registration when I am starting the Jan Aushadhi Store

No, you don’t need a GST registration when you are starting the Jan Aushadhi. You will need it later as your turnover reaches 40 Lakhs per year, You may need GST sometimes for applying for Bank loans. GST registration is not mandatory for PMBI or for getting a Drug license

What are the incentives offered by PMBI for starting a Jan Aushadhi store?

Normal Incentives;  5 Lakhs subsidy ( not loan) is paid to all categories of persons or organizations who are starting a Jan Aushadhi store. This is not paid as a lump sum, but paid as a 15% incentive on the sales ( purchases made from distributors or from PMBI) if your monthly purchase is 1 lakh you will get Rs 15000  directly into your bank account ( the same account which you had given when you applied for the jan aushadi store). The 15% incentive is paid every month till you reach a total of 5 Lakhs. The maximum amount payable per month is Rs15000 If your sale is only 50,000 for a month your incentive will be Rs7500. Even if your purchase is 5 Lakhs you will still get only Rs 15000.

Special Incentive

Special incentive shall be granted for PMBJK opened by the Women entrepreneurs, Divvying, SC, ST & any entrepreneurs opening ‘Janaushadhi Kendra(PMBJK)’ at aspirational districts (backward district) as notified by the NITI Aayog & in Himalayan, Island territories, and North- Eastern States. An amount of Rs. 2 Lakhs in addition to normal incentives, out of the 2 Lakhs, 1.5Lakh is reimbursed on submitting bills for furniture and interiors. the balance Rs.50,000 is reimbursed on submitting bills for computer and printers
